MeeGo 1.1 has been released officially, offering Nokia N900 users out there the possibility to try out the best of two worlds, Maemo and MeeGo. With U-Boot support included into the mix, MeeGo 1.1 brings Maemo or MeeGo environments to the mobile computer, enabling a wide range of N900 users rejoice.

The release comes a few days after Nokia N900 received a new software update, courtesy of which users can try out the new OS version too.

Basically, with firmware version 20.2010.36.2, which was said to be the PR 1.3 software, and with the new MeeGo v1.1 for handsets, Nokia N900 owners can get dual boot on their phones, being able to run either Maemo or MeeGo, as they please.

A couple of weeks ago, Harri Hakulinen, N900 Project Lead, announced via a blog post that Nokia N900 would soon be able to dual boot in MeeGo and Maemo, as the software to enable this was close.

However, he also underlined the fact that MeeGo is not completed, and that those users who install the MeeGo image on their Nokia N900 devices do so at their own risk.

The release of MeeGo 1.1 was announced ever since spring, when the first iteration of the OS was brought to light, MeeGo 1.0.

However, the handset optimized flavor of the platform was spotted only during summer, with the official release slated for October 27.

Today, those interested in getting the MeeGo 1.1 solution should head over to the MeeGo repository here to get it, or they can wait a little longer for the development team to deliver more info on the matter and for installation instructions to emerge.

One way or the other, we should soon hear more on MeeGo, that's for sure, especially since Intel confirmed not too long ago that the first devices to run under it would arrive on shelves sometime in early 2011.
