MediaTek is becoming a reputable competitor for Qualcomm

One of the perks of having a Snapdragon-enabled device is that Qualcomm has bundled the chip with Quick Charge 2.0TM technology, a system that is supposed to offer 75% faster charging speeds for compatible devices.

But as it turns out, MediaTek has been quick to catch up with Qualcomm by coming up with its own solution. The low-cost chip maker, who has pushed the affordable device revolution further, has just unveiled an alternative to Qualcomm’s Quick Charge feature.

It’s called “Pump Express Plus” and will be included into the latest MediaTek chip bunch, like the high-end MT6595 and the more affordable MT6732, as reported by Gizmo China.

MediaTek says that the Pump Express Plus is capable of delivering a 45% boost in charging speeds when compared to traditional chargers. The company has yet to provide us with the exact details of how the technology works, but we can tell you that it requires a special wall charger.

We don't know if the charger is going to be priced separately

MediaTek has released one such gizmo called HF-QC-084. The charger has three different charging modes, the first of which is called Regular and can pump juice at 5V-1.67A for a combined 8.35W.

The other two are Turbo 1 and Turbo 2 and can recharge the device by adding 7V - 1.67A (combined 11.69W) and 9V - 1.67A (combined 15.03W), respectively.

The system will allow users to charge from 0 to 75% battery in 30 minutes, while charging for five minutes will give you 2 hours of life.

We’re also told that the first phone to ship with this technology and a compatible charger comes from a pretty unknown Chinese brand. We’re talking about the Koobee Halo 3, a device that will be sold exclusively in China.

So it might take a while before we see any MediaTek phone bundling these capabilities being marketed internationally. Given that the low-cost chip maker has recently made an investment into Meizu, we can hypothesize that the phone maker’s upcoming MX5 flagship might take advantage of Pump Express Plus.

The MX5 has already leaked a number of times revealing a 5.5-inch handset with QHD display and an octa-core MediaTek chipset under the hood.
