MediaTek is a chip-manufacturer that often supplies mid-range mobile devices, but the company intends to up its game, so it is looking to integrate LTE connectivity into its architecture.

Earlier this month, MediaTek pulled the veil off the MT6595 which aims to blend a Cortex A17-based quad-core chip with 4G LTE connectivity.

And now the company is gearing up in the mid-range segment too, with the MT6732 chip, which incidentally will be put up for display at MWC 2014, say sources familiar with the matter reported by DigiTimes.

The above-mentioned MediaTek MT6732 is a 64-bit quad-core chipset complete with a 4G LTE modem. The chip is expected to provide competition to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 chipset, which is Qualcomm’s first 64-bit chipset based on the Cortex A53 architecture and also includes LTE connectivity.

The MT6732 will arrive on the market somewhere in Q3 2014, but MediaTek is also looking to build an octa-core 64-bit LTE chip in Q4 2014. The new wave of low-cost LTE chips is great news, because it means we’re going to see more 4G devices arrive with affordable price tags.
