The new version is no longer browser-dependent

Deb Nicholson has had the great pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of a major new release of the open-source media server software MediaGoblin.

Dubbed "A Gallery of Fine Creatures," MediaGoblin 0.8.0 is here to bring significant improvements to the client to server API (Application Programming Interface) component, which means that the software will no longer depend on a web browser.

In other words, you will be able to access and upload media files to and from a MediaGlobin server using nothing but a Pump.io compatible client, such as Dianara or Pumpa. Of course, if you have the skills, you can also write your own client using PyPump.

"The grand goal is a generic (and ubiquitous) client protocol that will work with lots of different served applications that use the pump standard," says Deb Nicholson. "Eventually, any Pump API compatible client will essentially be a MediaGoblin client and a Pump.IO client. We expect more client types to be added very soon!"

The MediaGlobin team is also working hard to implement support for sharing comments, tagging, as well as any other stuff that appears on your share media on a MediaGlobin media server. Apache users are informed that, in order for the new client to server API to work, they will need to add the "WSGIPassAuthorization On" option to their server's configuration.

Initial support for Python 3 is here

MediaGoblin 0.8.0 is also the first ever version of the popular open-source media server software to add support for the next-generation Python 3 dynamic programming language, though it is still experimental at this stage.

Another interesting feature of this release is that MediaGoblin now makes use of the GStreamer 1.0 open-source multimedia backend, which includes better support for video transcoding and a new thumbnailer.

Lastly, the software is no longer using Transifex, which has been replaced with Pootle, and the footer has received some much-needed fixes. Download MediaGlobin 0.8.0 right now from Softpedia.
