MechAssault: Phantom War is the latest game of the popular MechAssault series, and is part of the Battletech universe created by FASA. Players assume the role of a BattleMech pilot in a 3D environment, with a third-person view of the combat via the top screen of the DS, while the touch screen displays the inside of the cockpit and acts as the game's controls.
While the first MechAssault game had been originally developed for Microsoft's Xbox console, the creative team and publishers decided that a mobile iteration of the series on a handheld console might be the best way to go. Although not a lot of fans were thrilled by this decision, the game was developed, and managed to draw some pretty reasonable sales.
MechAssault: Phantom War received generally mixed reviews from industry critics and analysts. The game's praise came mostly from its well-made FMV cutscenes and great-voice acting, for which the developers employed some very talented actors.
Common criticisms included lack of online play, fact which could have worked extremely well with the DS' Wi-Fi capabilities, the lackluster graphics compared with those of other DS titles, the shortness of the single player campaign, and issues with the game mechanics, which rendered a lot of moves very hard to pull off.
