PETA and other animal rights activists must be jumping for joy right about now. Not to beat about the bush, the Humane Society of the United States has announced that the “Meatless Monday” movement had reached the Compton Unified School District in California.

This means that, from now on, students at 35 local schools will get to enjoy meat-free meals each Monday.

The initiative is expected to benefit not just the students, who will surely be in better health once they start limiting their weekly meat intake, but also the environment.

This is because, as greenheads have pointed out time and time again, the meat and the dairy industry use up a lot of our planet’s resources and also release loads of greenhouse gas emissions.

“Americans have among the highest per capita meat consumption in the world, and providing more information and plant-based meals to students can raise their consciousness about food as it relates to public health, the environment and the treatment of animals,” Kriste Middleton commented on the importance of this initiative.
