McAfee has recently announced its plans to acquire Web and Email security provider and cloud-based technology pioneer MX Logic for $140 million. The deal is expected to be finalized by the third quarter of 2009, with the MX Logic team reporting to McAfee's Software-as-a-Service business unit.

MX Logic is a company headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, which offers cloud-based solutions for email security and archiving, Web filtering and disaster recovery. Its data centers located in Asia Pacific, EMEA, Japan and the United States service the company's 40,000 business customers, which amount to over four million end users.

McAfee hopes to integrate MX Logic's products into its existent offerings and extend its already solid Security-as-a-Service portfolio, which is comprised of cloud-based technologies and services such as Artemis, TrustedSource, SiteAdvisor, McAfee Total Protection Service, McAfee SECURE or McAfee Vulnerability Assessment.

"The acquisition of MX Logic will reinforce our position as a leader in Security-as-a-Service and brings world-class email and web defense, including archiving and business continuity services, extending our proven expertise in providing cloud-based services to our customers," Dave DeWalt, president and chief executive officer at McAfee, said.

MX Logic's team will continue to function independently, but it will report to McAfee's Software-as-a-Service business unit, led by Marc Olesen, McAfee's senior vice president and general manager. The company's shareholders can get an extra $30 million later for specific performance targets.

"We will now be even better equipped to help our customers address the complex challenges associated with blocking spam, phishing scams, viruses in the cloud, and enforcing email policies to prevent sensitive data leaks," John Street, chairman and chief executive officer of MX Logic, commented.

Back in May, McAfee announced an agreement to acquire Solidcore Systems, a leader on the endpoint security market. The company offers dynamic whitelisting solutions for devices that operate in highly restricted environments, such as ATMs, SCADA systems, POSs or thin clients.
