The renowned security firm McAfee has released today an open-source audit plugin for MySQL databases, which allows administrators to create detailed activity logs that can be used to properly secure sites.

“McAfee developed the free database audit plug-in to give the community of MySQL users a means of building enterprise-level database security around their databases,” revealed Dan Sarel, vice president of database security product management at McAfee.

“When coupled with the McAfee Database Activity Monitoring sensor for MySQL, the data is subject to the same real-time analysis and policy enforcement as the data collected from other supported databases.”

The audit plug-in is easy to install and it doesn’t require any changes to be made to the existing database and network. It supports Oracle, Sybase, MS-SQL and DB2 databases, offering complete visibility into their security posture.

Here’s a video made by McAfee in which it’s demonstrated how databases can be protected with the new plugin.
