Animal rights activists have for some time now been protesting New York's horse-drawn carriages and, by the looks of it, it will not be long until they can yell “victory.”

Ecorazzi informs that, in a recent interview with the press, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio explained that, although the City Council had not yet introduced the proper legislation, this urban area was to definitely ban horse-drawn carriages sometime this year.

Given the fact that carriage operators in New York are convinced that, when in place, such a ban will surely leave them without a way to make a living, Mayor de Blasio has argued that, once horses are taken off streets, electric cars could take their place.

The mayor believes that these eco-friendly vehicles will be quite popular among tourists who wish to visit New York, and that they will also provide former carriage operators with animal-friendly employment opportunities.

“I think a humane society doesn’t do that to animals and we have an alternative where we’ll have an opportunity for tourists to have a similar experience but without horses being a part of it,” Bill de Blasio reportedly said in a statement.
