Microsoft’s new OS increases market share at a very slow pace

With the first Windows 8 update almost here, everybody expected the tech giant’s latest operating system to increase its market share a little bit, especially because Windows 8.1 is going to be offered for free to all its users.

The problem is that this isn’t happening and the Windows 8 adoption remains low in the first three weeks of May, according to statistics provided by market researcher StatCounter.

The first 21 days of this month made almost no difference in the overall operating system rankings, with Windows 7 still leading the charts with 53.74 percent of the market.

But as far as Windows 8 is concerned, it reached 5.25 percent, getting closer to Windows Vista that’s still powering 5.84 percent of computers worldwide.

These new figures also confirm that Microsoft still has a hard time trying to kill Windows XP, as the 11-year-old OS is currently being used by 21.2 percent of users in the entire world.
