The shaved head look that Max Payne is adopting for his third video game outing has annoyed some fans, but the developers working on the game at Rockstar believe that it serves a clear purpose, to show how the hero’s emotions evolve as the game progresses.

Speaking with G4 Rob Nelson, who is the art director working on Max Payne 3, stated, “We wanted to convey a sense of desperation and intrigue that is all too familiar for Max.

“One of the themes of the Max Payne series is the idea that Max is often in over his head, outnumbered and outwitted by unseen forces, and Max alone, looking for answers on the streets of an unfamiliar city, perfectly plays into the atmosphere and themes of the original games.”

He added, “One obvious thing to notice are the many different looks to Max as his appearance changes throughout the story. It reflects not only the progression of the narrative but also Max’s mental state. By the time Max decides to shave his head, he is ready to take the fight to his enemies, and feels like this is one way of preparing for the fight that is to come.”

The Rockstar executive also offered some more information on the Branco brothers, the family that Max Payne will be dealing with in the game, saying that the three siblings are very different in terms of temperament and reactions.

Working as a private security guard for the Branco family Max Payne will have to dig deep in the underworld of Brazil in order to see who he can trust and which of the brothers is behind the kidnapping of Fabiana, the wife of the eldest one.

Max Payne 3 will arrive on May 15 in the United States and three days later on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, and PC gamers will have to wait another two weeks in order to get their hands on the game.
