It was a sad day indeed for Amelie Mauresmo on Sunday. Coming into the French Open as a number 1 seed for the first time in her career, Mauresmo had to settle with a 3rd round performance. Although she wanted to confirm her great form in front of a home crowd, the Frenchwoman had to face her 12th straight year without passing the quarterfinals.
"I didn't feel that I was getting nervous, and especially looking at the way I played in that first set. Also, I was expecting for her to make a little bit more errors. I played her in Australia. She made some errors there but she didn't today", explained Mauresmo at the press conference. After taking the first set at tie-break (5), the no. 1 seed had no chance in the last two. First, Nicole Vaidisova stunned the crowd with a 6-1 in the second, and then a 6-2 in the decisive.
It was sweet revenge for Vaidisova, who had lost in the same round to Mauresmo in the Australian Open this year. Thanks to this stunning performance, she now has the chance to reach her first semifinal in Roland Garros, on the condition she'll get past American Venus Williams.
Another blow in the Roland Garros Grans Slam came on Sunday, when Russian favorite Maria Sharapova crashed out of the tournament. After 5-1 in the decisive set, she lost 6 games in a row, and the match, against compatriot Dinara Safina. It was definitely a blow for the young Russian, who proved, once again, that she is still not ready for a clay tournament. Safina will play Svetlana Kuznetsova in her first quarterfinal of career.
