Earlier this month, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves were married in a camp-themed ceremony held in their own backyard. Below is a video of the star on Jay Leno, offering more details on the fun and original reception.

But first, Matthew talks about his proposal to Camila last Christmas and how he surprised her with the ring by hiding it in several boxes and offering it to her as a disguised Christmas present.

Oddly enough, she did not say yes at first, the star shares.

“She gets to it, she opens it up, her eyes go wide. I take a knee and I ask her, 'Will you marry me and take my name?'” Matthew says.

“The first words out of her mouth were not yes,” he adds, laughing. “I’m not gonna say what it was. But I did say, 'Look, I’m down on a knee. I’ll stay here awhile. I will outlast you.' And I did! She conceded.”

As for the wedding, it was Camila's idea to set up 40 tents in their own backyard so that all their guests to the wedding could stay with them for at least 3 days to celebrate.

Matthew explains that these were no regular tents: as we also noted at the time, they all had air-conditioning, shower rooms and bathrooms, which means guests had all the comfort they could also get at a hotel.

They also had an open bar, a chef to cook for them and, most important of all, the company of each other.

“This is was her idea. She said, 'I want to build a village. I want all of our friends and family to come here, stay for three full days, have an experience with us, so they can really remember this weekend',” Matthew explains.

The party started on Friday and lasted until Monday morning, when the guests began to take their leave.

Matthew also tells Leno that he and Camila did not ask for gifts, but neither did they refuse the ones they got. Among the weirdest ones was a sword with a card that read “For the couple that has everything.”

Matthew and Camila had been together for 6 years before they married. They have 2 children together.
