Losing weight can have great benefits on your health if you're overweight, but no one claimed they became smarter from dropping  pounds. However, American actor Matthew McConaughey claims that he oddly became smarter when preparing for his role in “The Dallas Buyers Club.”

In an interview with Radio Times, McConaughey had some very interesting confessions to make about his shocking weight loss plan that included a very Spartan regime of Diet Coke, egg whites and a piece of chicken per day.

The reason why the actor said he became smarter when losing weight is because he had to find new ways of entertaining himself other than going out, as he couldn't go in town for meals.

“I had to relearn how to entertain myself, because I wasn’t going outside, I wasn’t going to dinner, I wasn’t going to social places. I was writing so much more, reading so much more. It ended up being this really fun adventure, internally.”

However, don't rush to follow in his footsteps with the same diet, because Matt also spoke about some very concerning side effects of his dramatic weight loss, “As soon as I hit 143lb [64.8 kg], I started losing my eyesight.”

Also, he lost a lot of his physical performance, “I would do five push-ups and be sore. I would run 30 feet and my legs would lock up.”

Refraining from eating wasn't the only inconvenience when preparing for his role. In order to achieve his pale complexion, Matt locked himself in his Texas house for six months and basically cut off all contact with the outside world.

As you can see, the Texas actor went through quite a lot in order to give a memorable performance, but at least he's now reaping the benefits by winning awards left and right.
