Until not long ago, Matthew McConaughey was considered one of the most ripped, hunkiest and best looking men in showbiz. He’s a mere shadow of his former self these days, as the photo attached to this article will confirm.

As Matthew himself announced over the summer, he’s been losing weight for a new movie role, one that will hopefully land him recognition from the Academy, as it happened with other actors undergoing drastic transformations as well.

People magazine writes that the actor is as his lowest weight ever, which means he’s dropped all 30 pounds (13.6 kg) he set out to lose this summer.

“Weight-wise, Matthew McConaughey is at his lowest point. The actor, 43, was snapped looking shockingly frail Friday as he caught a flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans, where The Dallas Buyer’s Club is set to begin filming Sunday,” the celebrity publication writes.

People further notes that the skinny frame and new moustache are both for the role, which sees Matthew play “a mid-1980s AIDS patient who seeks out experimental HIV drugs to prolong his life.”

This explains all those reports online saying the actor is looking “frail” and “sickly”: he plays a sick man, so his weight loss is meant to reflect that.

However, fans should not worry.

“Matthew starts shooting this weekend, so he’s at his absolute lowest weight. In a month, he’ll begin to put it back on,” an insider says for the aforementioned publication.

This summer, Matthew had lost only half the weight mostly by drinking plenty of tea to trick his body out of feeling hungry all the time.

Also then, the actor hinted that he knew what he was doing wasn’t entirely healthy but, as the saying goes, it was part of his job.

Considering how much the Academy (and the general public) loves a good transformation, it wouldn’t be that much of a surprise to hear Matthew gets a nominalization for his new movie.
