For the first time ever, co-host of The Today Show arrives late for work

Matt Lauer isn’t afraid to be a bit of a daredevil if that means boosting ratings for The Today Show. The other day, he surfed to work and, yes, there’s video to prove it.

Of course, the entire thing was staged and it would be almost childish to assume any different.

Savannah Guthrie, Matt’s co-host, set the stage with a tweet minutes before the show.

“Where in the world is @MLauer? Not in his seat – show starts in 7 mins. Looks like I’m doing @todayshow alone,” she wrote.

The video of Lauer surfing the streets was played back and ended just as he entered the studio on his surfboard, pretending to be in a huge hurry because he’d just gotten to work late, which had never happened to him before.

While Lauer gets credit for how he grabbed that coffee cup while surfing even though it was obviously hot, I can’t say this video really impressed me all that much, being a bit too transparent for my taste.

Maybe you feel differently about it. Enjoy.
