He had to bulk up to play a good kid on the wrong side of the track

Hot on the heels of the first official trailer for “Elysium” comes a brand new pic that hints at the kind of physical makeover Matt Damon had to undertake for the part. Click on the image above to see it in full.

The still comes in the latest issue of EW, accompanied by a brief interview with Damon and director Neill Blomkamp, he of the “District 9” fame.

Damon’s character, Max, is the typical good guy raised on the wrong side of the track. Having him covered in tattoos and ripped made sense.

“We wanted him to look a certain way so I had to keep up a workout regimen,” the actor reveals for the trade publication.

Plus, he had to be able to run and move easily with the steel contraption on his back, which Damon describes as his very own “hulk-suit.”

“It’s kind of like wearing one of those old Bo Jackson weight vests. It’s really insidious trying to carry extra weight even if you’re in shape. You just really need a pretty strong core or you can get injured pretty easily, particularly at my age,” the actor says.
