Ridley Scott is still working on his fall release, “The Martian,” based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Andy Weir, but fans don’t have to wait any more to see the first footage from it. Embedded below is a viral video for the film, in the form of a transmission from Ares 3 before launch to Mars.

Matt Damon is Mark Watney, one of the crew members on the ship. He is tasked with introducing the crew to viewers on Earth, and he does that with humor and warmth.

We meet Ares 3 pilot Rick Martinez (Michael Pena), Chris Beck and Aleks Vogel (Sebastian Stan and Aksel Hennie), Commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain) and “computer expert” Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara), and we get the distinct feeling that we’ve just been welcomed into a family.

Knowing the official synopsis of the film, this feeling won’t last for long: once they land on Mars, things go bad really quick, and Watney is left stranded on the planet with no means of communicating back to Earth, i.e. with no possibility of letting them know that he’s alive.

“The Martian” also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean and Donald Glover, but they’re not shown in this video, which means that they’re playing characters back on Earth.

The film will be out in US theaters starting November 25, just in time for the Oscars race.
