Matrix Games and 2by3 Games have announced that they are developing and planning to publish a new war game, called Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945. The companies are well known for creating turn-based historical games that focus on strategy and tactics. It will appear on the PC sometime towards the end of 2009.

David Heath, who is the director of operations at Matrix Games, stated that “War in the East is still in the early stages of development but already the gameplay is proving to be fantastic. We know anticipation for this title is very high and we look forward to giving you more and more details about yet another 2by3 Games blockbuster as they become available!”

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 aims to provide a strategic and tactical level simulation of the biggest and deadliest front of World War II. The terrain will be completely simulated with each hex a player sees on the screen the equivalent of 10 miles and with more than 2.5 million square miles being simulated.

The original orders of battle and troop disposition for both Nazi Germany and its allies and the Soviet Union will be fully reproduced down to division-sized units. The ultimate aim for the game is to utterly destroy the enemy and basically win the war, as the Eastern Front was crucial to the battle between the Axis and the Allies.

The simulation will include such things as production of new war material, losses reported down to every vehicle left on the field of battle, historical competence ratings for all the commanders that took part in the fighting, a supply chain automated yet detailed, and a complex weather system simulation aiming at showing just how crucial a good preparation for the Eastern campaign was for Germany. It's a game for those truly interested in history and familiarized with turn and hex-based play.
