The Mass Effect movie project is still set for production, as the screenwriter of the film, Mark Protosevich, alongside the executive producer of the video game series, Casey Hudson, talked at last week's San Diego Comic-Con about the film.

The Mass Effect saga has delighted gamers with two great titles, and is now getting ready to see the release of the third one early next year, which closes the trilogy that focused on Commander Shepard.

But the franchise, which already saw the release of comic books and novels, is now getting ready to see the launch of a movie, in partnership with Legendary Pictures, which is being written by Mark Protosevich.

The Hollywood man talked, via CVG, about the adaptation of games into movies, and how they usually fail because of the deep desire to portray just the actual story, without any sort of new and deeper features.

"I've been offered various games over the years and initially they can be very attractive, like a very attractive girl, but when you then sit down and talk with them, you might not necessarily find a lot of depth of character there.

"In the early days, there was this attraction to the idea of let's try to recreate this experience of it looks like this, it feels like this in a game, instead of really pausing and asking is this a good story? and is this an interesting world? Does it have interesting themes and all the aspects that make a really good film? I think most games would fail that litmus test, but this one doesn't. This game, I think, is incredibly unique."

The Mass Effect series is much deeper, however, thanks to the already impressive number of stories that were told through the actual games, the books or the comics, making the universe on part with famous movie franchises like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

"The great thing about Mass Effect is, this is a really rich world and what [executive producer] Casey [Hudson] and his team have done is really create this amazing universe that's as rich as Star Wars, as rich as Lord of the Rings. There are so many different offshoots and different characters and so it's a challenge to condense that into one feature length film. We're solely concentrating on the first game right now, but we are following and honoring that [wider] story."

The Mass Effect movie project is still in its early stages of development, however, so don't expect Commander Shepard to grace the silver screen for at least a couple of more years.
