BioWare has just revealed alongside Dark Horse Comics that it's going to release a special Mass Effect Foundation comic book series that's going to feature at least 12 parts and focuses on a new and quite mysterious female protagonist.

The Mass Effect franchise has not only consisted of different and quite popular games but also saw the release of different animated movies, like Paragon Lost, novels, like Ascension, and comic book mini-series, like the recent Homeworlds, which focused on various characters.

Now, BioWare and Dark Horse comics have confirmed at the Emerald City Comic Con that they're working on a new and much bigger series named Mass Effect Foundation.

The series will be written by Mac Walters, the man behind the stories of Mass Effect 2 and 3, and will feature a brand new protagonist, in the form of a mysterious redheaded girl that's quite skilled at combat, at least judging from the two images revealed to the public.

According to Walters, who talked with CBR, Foundation lays the groundwork for new stories in the Mass Effect universe that don't necessarily tie into the regular Commander Shepard trilogy.

"Foundation, as you might have guessed by the working title, is that it's the foundation. So we're going to go back and look at some of the -- we're not necessarily inventing new stories, we're going to go back and look at existing stories. Based off the response to the Homeworlds comics, people can look forward to some of their favorites showing up again, maybe even characters that haven't been touched on before."

Walters also mentioned that both BioWare and Dark Horse wanted to take a bigger risk and are trying to flesh out some of the things that were only hinted at in the games or books.

"When we started talking about what we could do in the future, we said, "Well, obviously, something that's character-based could work." Rather than going into an area where we tell brand-new stories in a universe that people know already, maybe we could find ways of fleshing out some of the stories that we've heard hints of already. At a high level, that's where we thought about going with Foundations and that's where we went with it."

As of yet, Mass Effect Foundation doesn't have a concrete release date for its first chapter.
