BioWare’s Montreal studio worked on the early stages of a Mass Effect first person shooter, called Mass Effect: Team Assault, which eventually became the cooperative Galaxy at War mode from the recent Mass Effect 3.

Games in the Mass Effect series delivered a third person shooter experience that allowed players to go on all sorts of adventures while using cover to shield themselves from enemy fire.

According to the recent Final Hours of Mass Effect 3 app from journalist Geoff Keighley, BioWare tasked its Montreal studio with turning the experience into a first person shooter one, resulting in a project called Mass Effect: Team Assault.

As you can see above, in the screenshot of a working build, it certainly had the franchise’s visuals and, according to BioWare itself, was supposed to mix gameplay of Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1943 into a downloadable experience.

The whole project was scrapped, however, but the Montreal team did use its expertise on the Galaxy at War cooperative mode from Mass Effect 3.
