Mass Effect - FAQ and Known Issues

Mass Effect from Bioware is without any doubt the most promising RPG weve seen on the Xbox 360. Even if its been plagued by some weird bugs and it drew a lot of attention with a nudity scandal, Biowares title remains a must-have. If youre not scared by the long and arduous conversations the game is based on, then youre in for a treat. We have listed some of the most frequently asked questions and a few known issues that have been plaguing the gameplay. We hope it will clear up any problems players had.

Frequently asked questions

I cannot unlock the Asari Henchmen Achievement
It is possible, though difficult. You need to have completed nearly all the quests in the game with her as one of your henchmen. You have to make sure you don't do any Citadel Quests and get Liara with your first story planet.

Why does it look so grainy?
Most likely, "Film Grain" and/or "Motion Blur" are enabled. Try turning off these effects in the Options menu.

I landed on Illos and now I cannot go back to finish my other quests
That is correct. After landing on Illos the story progression is to complete the game.

Does Mass Effect Have Left-handed controller support?
BioWare attempted to find the most efficient control scheme for Mass Effect that would accommodate the largest group of customers. While it is certainly able to change the Y-Axis on the controller, it is not possible to remap the other functionality.

How do I turn off film grain?
"Options" -> "Graphics" -> "Film Grain" -> "Off"

When can I talk to my party members?
To find out what is on your party member's mind, when you hear one of your party members absently make a sound, such as "hmm" or "oh", you can stop and press 'A' to talk to them. You will find that in more relaxed settings, such as in the Normandy or Citadel, your party members will be chatting more openly. Sometimes, they will also talk to you if there is a specific plot point that is directly related to them. The uncharted worlds are unfamiliar to all the members of your party, so they are concentrating more on the mission at hand than on idle chitchat.

How can I control a single party member?
There are a few ways you can manipulate your squad members other than the squad
command buttons. The first option, which will probably be enough to give you better control, is to use the power wheels to get them to perform a task. When you issue a command, the squad member should move to a location where they are able to make the attack. For example, if you are using Ashley and Kaidan, you can issue a command for Ashley to use a weapon specialty, which will cause her to go forward to get out of cover and fulfill the command, leaving Shepard and Kaidan safely behind cover.

How do I use "melee" attacks?
Press the R-trigger to rifle-butt enemies at close range. But be careful, enemies can do the same to you, and some of them are far stronger than humans!

How do I command my allies to use melee attacks?
Allies will automatically use melee attacks when in close quarters combat. They will not usually charge the enemy and melee them on their own.

How do I use ammunition upgrades?
Ammunition upgrades can be applied to a particular weapon by selecting that weapon on the inventory screen, pressing "X" to access the upgrade screen and then using the left thumb stuck to select the slot to the right of upgrade slot.

How do I get more grenades?
Grenades can be looted from vanquished foes or containers.

How do you use ally non-combat skills and what is their effect on play?
Ally skills are used automatically when applicable. For example, if a locked crate is present, the party member with the highest rating in the proper stat (Decryption or Electronics) will be used to determine if the crate can be opened by Shepard. In the cases of First Aid and Medicine, the talent bonuses are added passively. That is, if a henchman has +60 healing from first aid, your heal command will heal for 60 more damage, as long as that party member is in your squad. Likewise, if the party members Medicine talent gives -10% cool down on healing, your healing recharge time will gain the appropriate time multiplier automatically.

How does being "untrained" restrict weapon use?
A character that is untrained in a particular weapon will not be able to "zoom in", will be extremely inaccurate, will not have access to special abilities associated with proficiency in that weapon and generally does less damage.

Why can't I spend all of my character points in a given skill?
Character level limits how many ranks you can have in a given talent. Each time you gain a level, you unlock another rank, and gain more points to spend.

Getting the Hardcore & Insanity Achievements
To ensure you get the "Hard Core" and "Insanity" achievements:
Before you finish Eden Prime, check the game settings and confirm that the difficulty setting says "Hard Core" (Or "Insanity" if you have unlocked it). It is a good practice to confirm that the difficulty setting has been changed by going back into the game settings menu and double-checking that the changes were applied properly.
Don't change your difficulty level after you set it to hard core. If you started a play through and your difficulty level was "Hardcore" or "Insanity" before you left Eden Prime, and you did not change your difficulty level, you will receive the achievement.

Known Issues

Unable to survey a collection quest item
There were several that had incorrect flags, but the collection quest was changed so there are more than sufficient available to complete the quest. You only need about 75% of the total to finish the quest.

Unable to find the final keeper
One keeper in the Embassy may have difficulties streaming in if you go to the embassy via the Citadel Rapid Transit System.

Save Game Issues and Recommendations
Saving your game while in an elevator has been known to cause issues with the autosave system. For best results, do not save your game while in an elevator. Save prior to entering the elevator or after exiting.

It is also recommended that users make use of more than one save slot when saving their game. This practice will ensure maximum enjoyment of the game and will provide some insulation against any save game issues encountered.

RPGs can easily get much better than this. How much have Bioware paid you to come up with that? The total playable-map area is only a portion of most RPGs, the number of locations is nearing poor, the attributes are very subjected to limits, and although the fighting is good, it is quite repetitive if you come out the storyline. Also, spaceflights may not be needed to make a good space-based game, but certainly that leaves for RPGs to easily get better than ME. The good thing about this game is that is New-Generation, improving graphics notably, but then so does any other game released lately. This seems to me an EA Games type of game: great graphics for the ads, lots of bribing on those who are meant to give an impartial opinion, and no substance in the actual game.
