You can choose to pay with either in-game credits or real-world money

Mass Effect 3 is finally out today in North America and already quite a lot of fans have met with an interesting option when entering the Galaxy at War cooperative multiplayer mode, which allows them to pay real world money for in-game equipment packs.

Without a doubt one of the most controversial features of Mass Effect 3 is its co-op mode, dubbed Galaxy at War, which sees players create new characters and try to complete different types of missions alongside other people, being rewarded with experience and in-game credits.

The latter can be used to buy equipment packs, which are classified into three different packages, Recruit, Veteran, and Spectre, and contain things like extra items, new weapons or different alien races for each of the classes in the mode.

If earning in-game credits throughout different matches isn’t your thing, we have now learned, via Reddit, that you can also use actual money to buy these equipment packs.

As such, for a Veteran pack, you can pay either 20,000 credits or 80 BioWare points, on the PC. For a Spectre pack, you can fork up 60,000 credits or 160 BioWare points.

It’s unclear if this mechanic is also used on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, as of yet.

While some people may be annoyed by this turn of events, don’t forget that this isn’t mandatory and all you’re getting are just more unlockable items that help you and your team during a match.

What’s more, if you have lots of time, you probably won’t need to pay a single cent for in-game equipment. If you want to unlock more things and don’t have the time to play through multiple matches, then paying actual money is a good option to have.

Mass Effect 3 is out today in North America, and will appear on Friday, March 9, in Europe, for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.
