Players will need to use tactics, powers, different weapons

Mass Effect 3 is set to be the conclusion of one of BioWare’s biggest franchises and the developers are eager to make sure that the action side of the game matches up the ambition of the storytelling.

Speaking to the Official Xbox Magazine, Preston Watamaniuk, the lead designer working on Mass Effect 3, stated, “We really thought about it hard. On Normal you’ll be able to power your way through the game or shoot your way through the game, but when you try Hardcore or Insanity, you’re not going to be able to do that any more.”

He added, “You really will have to think about each combat, who the enemies are, what kind of resistance you’re presented with, and then strategise to take them down. I’m hoping that it’ll feel like you made a mistake, and the game called you on it, rather than ‘I thought I was playing well, and then I died’.”

Mass Effect 2 has been criticized by some gamers for the fact that it made the action parts too easy, allowing players to just use cover and carefully placed shots to get out of any tough situation.

It seems that the development team at BioWare is eager to deliver more of a challenge in the coming game, especially to those who are ready to sign up for the higher difficulty levels.

There are more options for gamers to consider using during firefights, including more mobility and more powers, and that means that more thinking is required in order to find a strategy that works for more than one situation.

It seems that the catalyst for the increased difficulty on Insane was suggested by the developer of another big franchise who believed that BioWare had the space to deliver an experience that challenged even the most hardcore of fans.

Mass Effect 3 is set to arrive on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 in the early days of March.
