Fans are divided when it comes to the extended endings

BioWare finally launched the long-awaited Extended Cut downloadable add-on for Mass Effect 3 yesterday and now, after many players got to re-experience the game’s three endings, as well as the all-new fourth one, reactions have already started to appear.

Mass Effect 3 generated a heated debate on the web when it first came out in March due to its three very controversial endings. Many players started expressing their disappointment and accused BioWare of not taking into consideration the array of choices they had made throughout the three games.

BioWare quickly confirmed that an Extended Cut DLC that should clarify the endings would be released and launched it yesterday on the PC and Xbox 360 worldwide, as well as on the PS3 in North America (European PS3 owners need to wait until July 4 to get it).

We have already posted an article with the three changed endings as well as with the new, fourth one.

Now, fans have started voicing their disappointment with how BioWare modified the already controversial endings.

The fourth conclusion, in which players can openly defy the Reapers and get obliterated in the process, has generated the most heated response.

“Oh Bioware, what a golden opportunity you missed there to make everyone happy,” said one fan on Reddit. “Giving the option to reject the Starchild's choices is the right way, but what comes next should depend on the amount of war assets and your actions throughout the trilogy.”

No matter the actual number of War Assets and Galaxy Readiness, defying the Reapers causes everything to be destroyed, without so much as a cinematic cutscene detailing the actual battle. This, it seems, has hurt the feelings of quite a lot of players who think that BioWare has practically insulted their dedication to the series.

“Apparently Bioware still can't swallow their pride and fix an ending everybody detests. Even worse, it seems rather passive aggressive of them to build in a choice that lets you reject Bioware's endings, just as you always wanted, and reap the total annihilation of the galaxy for it.”

Some players are happy with the extended endings, claiming that the DLC did bring some much needed closure, just like it advertised, so it’s still hard to say how successful the Extended Cut was.

What do you think about Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut? Has it transformed the endings or are they still as bad as before?
