Gamers can complete missions in order to get rewards

Video game publisher Electronic Arts and hardware maker Microsoft have announced the launch of a new Facebook application linked to the upcoming Mass Effect 3 video game, which seems to be designed to offer a number of in-game bonuses for those who will play the game on the Xbox 360 home console.

The app can be accessed from the official Xbox page and after launching it players can chose to go on a number of missions in order to get prizes, with the first one offering gamers a Normandy item for the Avatar that the player can create.

The missions include puzzle solving, photography and creating an Omnitool from scratch.

The prizes will include Xbox 360 consoles, accessories, vouchers and Mass Effect themed merchandise.

It is not clear why the app is not offering the same content for those who plan to experience Mass Effect 3 on the PlayStation 3 or on the PC, given that such limited rewards are unlikely to get players to switch the platform they have in mind.

Electronic Arts has mentioned plans to launch more mobile and social tie-ins for Mass Effect 3.
