Video game publisher Electronic Arts has announced that the multiplayer modes included in the upcoming mix between action and role playing Mass Effect 3 will be using the Online Pass feature, which means that a code included in new copies of the game will have to be used.

Those who pick up the game new will have to enter the code to get access to the Galaxy at War mode while those who are picking up an used copy of Mass Effect 3 will have to pay Electronic Arts ten dollars in order to get a new code and then access.

The Online Pass is linked to the Ten Dollars Project, which Electronic Arts initiated in order to extract some value from the second hand market while making new video games more attractive to gamers.

The Galaxy at War concept will allow players to influence the single player element of the game via a number of cooperative missions which use a range of new characters and BioWare has said that it will also launch iOS and Facebook applications that are linked to it.

In coop mode players will be able to use the races Krogan, Asari, Drell, Salarian, Turian and human.

It will also link the player to the BioWare Social Network and will allow him to get add-ons and more downloadable content.

Casey Hudson, who is the executive producer working on Mass Effect 3, stated, “The theme of galactic war in Mass Effect 3 presents us with the perfect opportunity to introduce multiplayer into the Mass Effect series.”

He added, “Multiplayer not only features amazing combat and deep customisation options, but it will give players another way to help the war effort against the Reapers in the main event – the single player campaign.”

Mass Effect 3 will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 on March 6 of next year.
