The incredible 3D visuals achieved by Capcom in Resident Evil 4 for iPhone and iPod touch were possible only through the HI 3D Rendering Engine "MascotCapsule eruption," HI Corporation has confirmed. Capcom specifically adopted the rendering solution to port Resident Evil 4 on Apple’s portables, a report suggests.

“Supporting the industry-standard OpenGL ES, eruption has an advantage of high-speed rendering by making the best use of the 3D graphics accelerators of iPhone and iPod touch, enabling more sensitive and realistic 3D graphics than the existing mobile phone games,” HI Corporation explains. “HI is committed to further strengthening its support so that eruption will be widely used in games and content development and spread across the world,” the company states in a report.

The rendering solution developed by HI Corporation is based on MascotCapsule V3, a light 3D full software rendering engine that doesn’t require specific hardware. Therefore, game developers and content developers can easily use their know-how without learning new techniques, the company claims. In addition to these benefits, the solution offers many functions for various effects, allowing for an effective 3D graphics programming. “This has actually contributed to cutting the development time for this game,” HI Corporation asserts.

As fans should know, the Resident Evil 4 iPhone port has the same story line, with Leon S. Kennedy, formerly Raccoon City Police Department’s idealistic rookie cop, now a U.S. agent with a top-secret mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the President’s daughter. The game’s iTunes description lists “the best 3D graphics to date on iPhone” as the top feature of the game, followed by key points like: 3rd-person perspective camera for a panoramic view of the action, context-sensitive controls, an unlockable Mercenary Mode and more.
