The only French player to win the Rolland Garros Grand Slam tournament in the recent history of world tennis, Mary Pierce, will have to just sit and watch this year's clash on the bench.
Less than three days before the French Open gets under way, the 31-year old player has suffered a leg injury. More, the groin injury that she suffered a few months ago appeared again, making her participation in this year's tournament truly impossible.
"I have taken this decision on Thursday night, after consulting with my doctors. I realized that I've not fully recovered from my injuries, and I see no point in taking unnecessary risks. I am truly sorry, especially since I won't be able to perform before a French crowd, but maybe I'll be luckier next year", said the 2000 winner of the French Open.
Pierce is a true veteran of the French capital tournament. She was one of the big surprises in the 1994 edition, when she managed to reach the final although she was only 19 years of age - losing though the chance to win it. She took her well-deserved revenge 6 years later, when she conquered the first Grand Slam title of her career, becoming the first French woman to do so in a very long time.
Although a series of unfortunate injuries seemed to have put an end to her career, Mary Pierce struck back the world of tennis last year, after managing some great performances in the WTA Tour. Her great form had an impressive result in last year's French Open, when she again stunned everyone after reaching the final. Due to some stomach-aches though, she had no chance of winning against current title holder, Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne.
Mary Pierce's injury - that came only 2 days ago - adds up to one of the most "cursed" tournaments in the last years. Some other players that will miss this year's French Open are: Andy Roddick, Guillermo Coria, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
