The past weekend could safely be labeled "phantom wedding weekend" - either that or the "did they or didn't they" interlude. Beyoncé and her rapper boyfriend Jay-Z made the headlines with their hushed up wedding weekend, and what began as a playful "wonder
if they’ll do it" game of putting together scattered hints and rumors ended up turning into a fully-fledged stake-out operation, with countless photographers and fans literally camping outside Jay-Z's Tribeca apartment. To this moment, none of the two artists confirmed the rumored wedding, but various "friends" of the couple have reportedly confirmed that indeed, the hip-hop mogul and his R&B superstar girlfriend have tied the knot. The latest shout-out came from Mary J. Blige, who is currently touring with Jay-Z and offered the couple her (very loud) congratulations.
"Congratulations to my man Jay-Z, and my girl B.," Blige shouted to the packed Greensboro, North Carolina concert hall before starting her set singing "You're All I Need". Jay-Z, however, remained completely quiet on the topic, as he went about business as usual without addressing the issue, without wearing a wedding ring. However, a friend told People magazine that "It happened earlier (Friday) evening. Jay wanted it to be a really private affair - close friends and family." The ceremony - believed to have taken place inside a white tent placed on the rooftop of jay-Z's Tribeca apartment - brought together family (Beyoncé's mother Tina Knowles, father Mathew, sister Solange) and friends of the two (Destiny's Child alumns Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, plus Gwyneth Paltrow).
On the whole, it looks like for now, the world must learn to live in ignorance of what truly happened on Friday, which is a very difficult thing to do, in an age when the public has grown accustomed to being kept informed at the touch of a button. Jay-Z and Beyoncé's decision to keep quiet about the whole crazy circus proved one (very valuable) thing however: if two celebrities of their stature want to keep their life private, they can even get married without letting the world know their each and every step. The obvious lesson here would be "other famous faces could do the same" - the trick is, most of them don't really want that most of the time.
