One of the risks of modern life, what with all the technology available, is that nothing is ever really gone, not even the stuff you want erased. A lot of celebrities, including A-list actresses and models, found that out the hard way over the weekend, when a massive collection of their private, raunchy photos were leaked online by a hacker.

Among them was also actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who had posed for and with husband Riley Stearns, a movie director, at home, several years ago. Let’s just say that the photos were not for public consumption and that they would have preferred that they never saw the light of day.

This is the biggest celebrity leak scandal so far, and no wonder Winstead too is outraged. The leak was possible when a hacker targeted her iCloud account, the service used by Apple to store data for backup from its devices.

So, even if Winstead deleted the photos from her phone, which she’s saying she did, they were still there, in the iCloud – for the hacker to access and then distribute online. This way, photos she and her husband took for their personal pleasure, went public.

In a short statement on Twitter, the actress blames both the person behind the breach and those who encourage such acts by seeing the photos and perhaps even demanding more.

“Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this. Feeling for everyone who got hacked,” she writes. “To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves.”

Moreover, because she’s had enough with the scandal, Winstead announces she’s going away for a while, presumably at least until this dies down. Considering the sheer number of celebrities involved, she might be offline for longer than she imagines.

“Going on an internet break. Feel free to my @'s for a glimpse of what it's like to be a woman who speaks up about anything on twitter,” she writes on the social networking site.

Besides Winstead, other celebrities to address the leak so far include Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence and Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton, perhaps one of the hottest fresh faces in the industry.

However, the hacker boasted of having even more photos and video too of other stars, like Kim Kardashian, Kirsten Dunst, Ariana Grande and Victoria Justice. Many of those he already released have proved to be just fakes.
