Marvell, leader in integrated silicon solutions, has just announced the availability of a new technology for global mobile communications, namely the Marvell PXA1801, which is nothing else than a single-chip LTE world modem.

The new LTE modem comes with Marvell's leading communications and silicon expertise, and can be easily integrated into a series of high-performance, low-power devices that enjoy Internet connectivity, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, TVs, and more.

The PXA1801 features a Mobile Multi-RAT design, putting together 3GPP R9 Cat 4 FDD-LTE (Frequency Division Duplexing Long Term Evolution) and TDD-LTE (Time Division Duplexing Long Term Evolution) connectivity capabilities.

Moreover, it comes with R8 DC-HSPA+ (Dual Carrier Evolved High-Speed Packet Access) for both WB-CDMA and TD-SCDMA standards, as well as with EDGE capabilities.

“The world modem is another game-changing breakthrough from Marvell,” Weili Dai, Marvell's co-founder, commented.

“As a leader in China's 3G standard TD-SCDMA technology, Marvell has enabled the delivery of a wide array of affordable, advanced consumer devices – including smartphones, tablets and mobile hot spot devices – to China, the world's largest mobile market.

“Building on that foundation, Marvell is now leading the way to a new era of seamless global connectivity for the masses with the industry's first single chip 2G/3G/4G modem with support for FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, and EDGE.”

The new modem was designed to offer superior technical performance, and also to provide increased flexibility while reducing the implementation costs.

3G is one of the technologies that should play an important role in the evolution of communications in the next few years as well, and Marvell has integrated R8 WCDMA HSPA+ (42 Mbps DL) and R8 TD-SCDMA HSPA+ (8.4 Mbps DL) in the new modem to offer the required performance regardless the infrastructure and location.

Moreover, the company put LTE inside the new chip so as to ensure that new devices can offer support for increased streaming video and data traffic. The modem comes with support for release 9 features, which further enhances signal reception on the user side.

“I envision a time soon when a truly affordable global communications network helps to bring our world closer as consumers from every walk of life enjoy uninterrupted access to all services, applications and the worldwide cloud from any device they choose anywhere they roam,” Weili Dai concluded.
