The team at comic book company Marvel says that it is aiming to create a connected gaming-focused universe that is designed to draw fans in and keep them engaged in a manner similar to that of the current movie releases.

NeoGAF quotes executives that took the stage during the Geek section of the SXSW Interactive Festival as saying that the company has a long-term plan that will involve all its media properties, which will end up adding more value to the experience of all fans.

TQ Jefferson, the vice president in charge of video game development, states, “You might have noticed that certain similarities and threads touch from one game to the next. Much like you see in publishing and film, we’re trying to build a gaming universe connected by common elements and narrative into a larger gaming initiative.”

A fifth Chapter is being created for Avengers Alliance, which is a two-year-old social game that has managed to attract more than 50 million gamers.

It seems that the focus of the new content will be on The Falcon, Winter Soldier and Batroc the Leaper, all characters that are also featured in the coming movie based on the same property.

Jefferson adds, “Especially Batroc, we wouldn’t have gotten him anytime soon. It’s really thanks to the film.”

Marvel also says that it is launching a new application programming interface that is designed to make it easier for developers to access artwork, data and character details created by the company that can then be used for original titles.

It is unclear whether this means that fans will be able to create their own mini-games and adventures using familiar characters.

The company says that it will continue to talk to fans and focus on the feedback that they are offering in order to see how they want the comic book universe to evolve in the future, especially when it comes to video games.

There was no information linked to the recent rumors that suggest that Disney will use Marvel characters, starting with those featured in movies, in order to create an expansion for Disney Infinity or to deliver an entirely new title based on the toy-powered video game.

Disney also has a long-term development deal with Electronic Arts, which will use characters from the Star Wars universe.

At the moment, Marvel titles are being created in partnerships with a variety of third-party developers.
