Martin Scorsese is taking up another television project: the famed director and Miramax have teamed up to create a new series based on his hit 2002 film “Gangs of New York,” The Wrap confirms.

Whereas the film only dealt with the gangs in New York in the 19th century, its TV companion would expand on the idea and literally offer a look at the birth of organized crime in America, by the inclusion of other cities as well, such as New Orleans and Chicago.

“This time and era of America's history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two hour film,” Scorsese says in a statement.

“A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life,” he adds.

In a separate statement, Miramax points out the obvious: they’ve teamed up with the best man in the industry for a project of this scale.

For the time being, other details about the series are not known.
