Marston’s, the famous UK-based brewery, has suffered a data breach. Hackers have gained access to one of the company’s databases.

According to Computerworld UK, the company has sent out notification emails to impacted customers. The company reports that the cybercriminals gained access to a database storing the details of people who registered an account on wychwood.co.uk.

The attack occurred on September 28, Marston’s learned of the breach after being notified by Digital Junkie, the company’s hosting provider.

The compromised information includes names, contact details, information on customer loyalty and, in some cases, dates of birth and login credentials.

Marston's representatives say that only around 3% of the passwords stored in the database have been stolen, but the company assures users that the information is properly encrypted.

Interestingly, one impacted customer reported receiving an HSBC-themed phishing email to an address that had only been used to register an account on the Wychwood website. This indicates that the attackers have already started putting the stolen data to good use.

The brewery says there are no other reports of phishing and spam, but advises customers to be on the lookout.
