The creative director of Rockstar Games has said that in creating the Undead Nightmare downlodable content pack for its Western shooter Red Dead Redemption the company specifically tried to create a contrast with the gritty realism of the main game experience, delivering ridiculous zombies and putting the characters in weird situations.

Talking to Gamespot about the new content Dan Houser, who is one of the co founders of Rockstar, has said, “You play Undead Nightmare as John, and it is an entirely stand alone game that runs separately from Red Dead Redemption’s main story and not part of any Red Dead Redemption ‘canon’ if such a thing exists.”

The game designer also says that John Marston is more suited to the role of zombie hunter than other Rockstar made main characters, like C.J. Johnson from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or Niko Bellic from GTA IV.

Houser's talk about a probable “canon” to Red Dead Redemption might mean that Rockstar, which has long searched for another franchise which it can deliver on the off years of Grand Theft Auto, might be developing another game with a Western setting.

Red Dead Redemption was a hit earlier in the year and managed to top the NPD Group chart for both the months of May and June.

The company put out quite a bit of DLC for the game, expanding the multiplayer element of the game with more gang hideouts and more weapons.

The Undead Nightmare pack will add zombies to the huge expanses of the West and will change the tone of the game to feel much more apocalyptic than in the main adventure.

The Undead Nightmare DLC package will be released on October 26 on both the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony and is the last of the DLC announced by Rockstar at the moment.
