“The Crow” was released in theaters in 1994 to great critical and box office success –a sequel has been in the works ever since. Now, things finally seem to be going in the right direction, with a possible lead found in Mark Wahlberg.

As fans must know, the original “Crow” starred Brandon Lee as rocker turned undead vigilante Eric Draven but, sadly, he did not live to enjoy his newfound fame.

Work on a possible sequel / remake / reboot has often stumbled on this obstacle: finding someone who could walk in Lee’s (huge) shoes, because it’s being said that there’s no replacing him.

One way or the other, that will probably happen – and the guy to replace Lee as Draven is certainly not fans’ first choice, as Bloody Disgusting reports.

“Bloody Disgusting has confirmed exclusively that Mark Wahlberg was offered the lead role in Relativity Media’s The Crow, a remake of the 1994 film that starred Brandon Lee as a man (Eric Draven) brutally murdered that comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée’s murder,” the e-zine says.

“Iconic musician and acclaimed screenwriter Nick Cave has been working on a rewrite with Stephen Norrington (Blade, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ) attached to direct,” BD further informs.

However, it seems that producers are more than aware of the risk they’re taking by going with Wahlberg for the remake, which is why there’s a high chance the film will actually take an entirely different direction.

If it doesn’t and the film only tries to recreate the original with some tweaks here and there, fans won’t be happy – Bloody Disgusting included.

“The new tale is said to take place in Detroit. Now, the offer has been made, therefore Wahlberg could (and hopefully will) decline. I can’t say this news has me swimming in excitement,” the e-zine notes.

As it happens, many others feel the same: Wahlberg has already proved he can act and that he’s no longer Marky Mark, but he’s simply not suited for the Draven part.

Casting him for the reboot / remake is on par with casting Vanilla Ice for a new “Blade,” when it’s Wesley Snipes who literally made that part, fans say on the BD comments section.

Of course, there are also some who believe this could actually work: but only if the film takes on a different direction from the original, meaning, if it’s a film on its own and not a product that draws on the 1994 “Crow.”
