Mark Wahlberg has come a long way from his Marky Mark days, making a strong name for himself as actor and producer. He might have tossed that down the drain, together with his reputation, with his comments in the latest issue of Men's Journal. In the interview (quotes via
Huffington Post), Mark, who once said he was initially supposed to be on one of the 9/11 flights but had changed his mind at the last minute, thus living to tell the tale, muses on the terrorist attacks.
He then accuses those on the planes of not enough heroism to prevent the planes from crashing on the buildings they destroyed, saying things would have been entirely different had he been on board.
“If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did,” Wahlberg says.
“There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, 'OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry',” he adds, making it sound as if he were, in real life, the action hero he so often portrays on the big screen.
It's not hard to imagine the public outcry and backlash that ensued the very moment this quote emerged online, with many saying Wahlberg should never imagine he has a legitimate reason to bring the topic up in a magazine interview just because he
could have been on the plane.
Widows of the heroes that actually lost their lives in the attacks are particularly upset and, as expected, word of the outrage eventually reached Mark.
He's now issued an apology,
TMZ reports.
“To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible,” the star says in a brief statement.
“To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with. I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention,” he adds.
Though his apology sounds sincere, not many are convinced by it. The very fact he said those things denotes what a stuck-up, conceited, terribly annoying man he is, voices are saying online.
