Mark Cerny, the main designer who worked on the PlayStation 4, says that his team has chosen the x86 processor for the new device in order to make sure that the platform is as flexible as possible on launch.

The developer initially believed that the architecture was too complex to use in a PlayStation-branded console, but researched the tech during the post-mortem process for the PS3.

He tells The Official PlayStation Magazine that, “Actual work on PS4 didn't start until 2008. I wasn't deciding whether the x86 would be the chip. I was trying to work out whether it would be an option. If you can also use the x86, you can talk to anyone out there who makes technology.”

Cerny then talked to the Sony development teams in order to make sure that they were able to create interesting things for the new platform.

The PlayStation 4 will be launched on November 15 in North America and two weeks later in Europe.
