14 DAY TRIAL // Marissa Mayer is already at the helm of Yahoo, though that may not end up being such an honor if the company turns out to be akin to the Titanic.
Iceberg ahead or not, Mayer is getting paid handsomely to steer the big ship. OK, enough with the naval metaphors, Mayer will be getting a base salary of $1 million, €814,000, standard fare for tech CEOs in Silicon Valley.
That could end up being double or even four times as much if she meets or exceeds, respectively, certain performance targets. But this is just the icing on the cake, the bulk of the compensation comes in stock options and grants, paid over five years.
For a start, she's getting a $30 million, €24.5 million one-time retention award, half in stock and half in stock options. These will vest over five years, so she's not seeing much up front. However, she is getting $14 million as compensation for the money she left behind at Google.
There are other bonuses in line if the company does well, depending on how it goes she could be making anywhere between $60 million and $140 million, €49 million to €114 million over the next five years.
That said, a couple of other Yahoo CEOs, which didn't do much of a job at the company, got paid even more than that.
Carol Bartz, which was ousted after two and a half years at the job, was initially offered some $187 million, €152 million. She got $47 million, €38 million in the first year alone. Terry Semel though, who was CEO at Yahoo up until 2007 got about $500 million, €407 million over his period at the company.
Mayer doesn't need the money though, as Google's 20th employee she is already quite rich, she's worth about $300 million, €244 million at this point. She got a lot of it in the IPO, but we can imagine that she was compensated quite handsomely yearly after that as well.
