After a bit of speculation and some rumors, Sega and Nintendo have officially announced a brand new Mario & Sonic game, this time seeing the two iconic mascots going to London for the Olympics, in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Hot off the heels of another Sonic announcement at the beginning of the week, in the form of the Sonic Generations title, which celebrates the 20th birthday of the blue hedgehog, Sega and Nintendo have partnered up once more.

This time, Mario & Sonic, alongside many of their friends, will star in a brand Olympics game, just in time for the start of the 2012 London Olympics.

The game will be released both for the Nintendo Wii home console as well as for the brand new Nintendo 3DS platform, and will be host to a whole array of different Olympic-themed activities.

From classics like athletics, table tennis or aquatics to all-new events like soccer or equestrian riding, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games will no doubt provide plenty of families with a great experience.

All of the activities can be experienced in single-player, while many of them also have multiplayer modes, but it isn't clear if it's a full online mode or just a local one, designed for playing with friends on the same couch.

On the 3DS, the new Mario & Sonic game will take advantage of the platform's unique capabilities, including its glasses-free 3D visuals, and brings over 50 Olympic events to the portable device.

"These games bring together two of the most beloved characters in the history of the video game industry in Mario and Sonic," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "As veterans of both video games and Olympic games, they will arrive in London as a formidable team to provide fun, competitive sporting activities that friends and family members can enjoy together."

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games will be released on the Wii and 3DS, but a concrete launch date hasn't been revealed by the two companies.
