Akira Otani, a producer working on the new Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, says that the new Wii U game took more than three years to make because the studio wanted to create a unique and interesting look for the experience.

During the Iwata Asks program, he says that all characters were initially created as 2D pixel art and then the company shaded them using 3D techniques, which were also used on the background for the game, according to Polygon.

He says, “We worked out special ways of drawing and using color to make them look three-dimensional. The work load was tremendous, but thanks to that, it has the sort of smooth polish distinctive of AlphaDream.”

Both Mario and Luigi each required the creation of movement animations for 16 possible directions.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team will be out on the eShop on July 12 in Europe and one month later in North America.
