Mariah Carey reveals she was mentally and emotionally abused in a past relationship

On a recent appearance on Larry King Live, Mariah Carey shattered the misconception about her life having been the stuff that dreams are usually made of, revealing a history of emotional and mental abuse. Because she too was once in an abusive relationship, she was shattered when hearing what had happened to Rihanna at the hands of her then-boyfriend Chris Brown, People magazine informs.

Mariah Carey is usually not the type of celebrity that will openly discuss issues of her personal life, yet, for some reason or another, she did just that on a recent Larry King Live show. The discussion started off with a question on how she felt when hearing about Rihanna and how she had gotten assaulted by Brown, to which Mariah replied by saying, as expected, that she had been shocked.

However, it was like this for her because she could relate to what Rihanna had been through. “I was very sequestered, as you know, when I first started out... I wasn’t really allowed out of the house, so I can’t imagine what she went through. Emotionally, mentally, in other ways [abused]... It’s scary,” Mariah said on the show. She would not go into more detail though, saying only that the memory of that relationship is something she chooses not to dwell on too much if she can avoid it.

“You know, I just think you get into a situation and you feel locked in. If your situation is similar to one of the situations I’ve been in – which I won’t harp on – for me, to really get out, it was difficult because there was a connection that was not only a marriage but a business thing, where the person was in control of my life,” Mariah further explained.

On Larry King's show the singer also refuted rumors that she was pregnant with her husband Nick Cannon’s first child, saying it was unlike her to give birth and then have a team of nannies see to the child. Her sole focus now is on her most recent film, “Precious,” on promoting it and, of course, on her music.
