They’re doing their best to “keep it together”

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were the unlikeliest couple in showbiz for 6 whole years, but they were definitely happy. Earlier this year, Cannon revealed that he and the diva had been living in separate houses for a while and that things between them had come to an unexpected end.

Still, Nick did his best to refute ongoing allegations that the split was entirely Mariah’s fault or that he had cheated on her, saying that they were parting as friends, putting up a united front for the children, 3-year-old twins Morocco and Monroe.

It turns out that this plan isn’t coming along as they expected, because the divorce is getting “contentious.”

Mariah and the phone call that nearly ruined her Christmas performance

Earlier this week, Mariah Carey was booked to perform her Christmas classic “All I Want for Christmas” for a pre-taping of the NBC special at the Rockefeller Center. She was 3 hours late to the event, infuriating NBC bosses and the hundreds of fans who had waited for her in the rain and the cold for several hours.

The NBC bosses were the maddest because they actually sent Mariah home, telling her she would not be performing at all because of the stunt she’d just pulled. They eventually changed their mind and allowed her back on the program the next day, with the promise that Mariah would be singing live.

She did sing live but it turned out to be a disaster, as the video with her isolated vocals below can confirm. That’s an entirely different story, though.

Rumors online said at the time that Mariah was this late to the performance because she’d been on the phone for hours with her divorce attorney, trying to reach an agreement in the Cannon split. They’re yet to file the divorce papers, and it is believed that they want to settle everything before they do so, especially custody and financial arrangement.

Divorce talks are heating up

People Magazine confirms that this was the case, indeed: Mariah and her divorce attorney spoke on the phone for 5 full hours, which made her run 3 hours late for the performance. That long a conversation means only one thing, a source says for the publication: Mariah and Nick can’t reach an agreement before filing the papers.

“She's trying to keep it together. I think they're trying to work all these details out on property and the kids before it gets filed. They communicate because of the kids,” the insider explains.

Even though they’re both determined to put up a united front and act in such a way as to impact the children the least, it seems that they can’t reach an amicable agreement. It is believed that Mariah and Nick don’t have a prenup, which would mean that a divorce would see their estates divided by half.

Mariah Carey is worth an estimated $520 million (€423.2 million), while Nick Cannon’s worth is valued at about $20 million (€16.2 million). If they really don’t have a prenup, Mariah’s about to be parted with many of her hard-earned millions.
