You probably won't even guess what the Ball Beats does just by hearing its name.

Fortunately, there is media coverage and even a video of the thing in action, so the mystery needn't plague anyone.

Basically, Ball Beats (supposedly on sale and priced at $199 / 155 Euro) is a physical step sequencer spread over an 8 x 6 grid.

A light sensor is built into each point, which means that a sample is triggered whenever a marble is placed on it.

Furthermore, light sensors built into the sides of the grid can be configured for different actions as well.

The link to a software interface is maintained by an USB connection. That same interface can send MIDI signals to whatever audio software one prefers most (the video uses Ambleton Live for the sound).
