Skyhook, one of the innovative developers of location-based technologies and the AOL-owned MapQuest have recently announced the launch of new application for Android smartphones.

MapQuest Android application embeds Skyhook's Core Engine, which makes the use of GPS features more reliable than ever before.

Users who decide to use the application will have an enhanced navigation experience on their Android devices, thanks to the Skyhook's Wi-Fi positioning system that provides precise and reliable location results in urban areas.

We are very excited to work with MapQuest to launch the first smartphone application to take advantage of the benefits of true hybrid positioning,” said Michael Shean, founder and senior vice president, business development, Skyhook. “We continue to partner with the leading Android app developers to ensure Skyhook's location technology is available everywhere.”

Skyhook's Core Engine introduces a new localization based on Wi-Fi signals, which provides users with a more reliable traveling experience.

With MapQuest Android users will continue to follow their route even when the GPS signal is lost, as the application will receive the information through a Wi-Fi connection.

To avoid the limitations in relying on GPS satellites, Skyhook offers users a unique combination of Wi-Fi signals and GPS via MapQuest Android.

Skyhook is the leader in location positioning, and MapQuest's partnership with them will provide better experiences and greater reliability to our Android customers,” said MapQuest's general manager and senior vice president, Christian Dwyer.

MapQuest has made great strides to innovate its offerings within the mobile community, and we want to continue to work with likeminded organizations, such as Skyhook, to provide more intuitive, more relevant products to mobile users.”

MapQuest for Android provides users a rich feature set that includes: voice guidance, turn-by-turn navigation, voice search, map toolbar, walking directions and live traffic flow information.

The application is available as a free download from Android Market and does not require subscription fees.
