Rare medical condition makes the skin look like the surface of the brain

Earlier this week, the New England Journal of Medicine witnessed the publication of a series of photos showing a Brazilian man who is suffering from a very rare medical condition: cutis verticis gyrata.

In simpler words, this man's scalp strikingly resembles the surface of the brain, meaning that is has numerous ridges and ruts.

Specialists explain that this rare condition is typically found in men, and that it begins to manifest itself shortly after a young boy hits puberty.

Although some cases of cutis verticis gyrata have been linked to cognitive disabilities and various mental illnesses (i.e. schizophrenia), it seems that the Brazilian man shown in this picture has never displayed any signs of such disorders.

More so, the man hardly seems bothered by his appearance, and almost never feels the need to cover his head with a hat or something like it.
