Here is a piece of news that will probably make you keep an eye open for police vans and officers looking to put you behind bars in the blink of an eye, while peeling potatoes or carving a beef roast.

Long story short, media reports say that, just a few days ago, a man in the United States was arrested on the grounds of having put a knife through a defenseless watermelon with a tad too much determination.

Rest assured, folks in this part of the world do not yet think of fruit and veggies as non-human persons and are still a long way from considering making an apple pie or a pineapple smoothie an atrocity.

Thus, it was not the stabbing of the watermelon per se that got this man arrested. On the contrary, Carmine Cervellino, of Thomaston, Connecticut, ended up in jail because of the symbolism of his gesture.

According to the officers who presented the 48-year-old with a pair of handcuffs and then more or less politely asked him to accompany them to a local police station, the man was being passive-aggressive when he stabbed the fruit.

More precisely, word has it that, when he grabbed hold of a knife he chanced to find lying around the house and viciously attacked the watermelon, Carmine Cervellino was actually trying to scare his wife and threaten her.

It was earlier this month, on July 4, when the man's wife contacted the police and told them that her husband had drugs, marijuana included, hidden inside the house. Apparently, the woman, named Carol, even went as far as to film the stash.

However, at the time when officers arrived at the couple's home, both the drugs and the camera that the woman used to film them were gone. Hence, Carmine Cervellino was not arrested and instead allowed to go back to business as usual.

It is believed that, when he stabbed the watermelon and left it on the kitchen table for his wife to see, the 49-year-old was trying to get Carol to understand that, unless she kept her mouth shut about his dealing, he would harm her too.

The New York Post informs that it was this past Saturday that Carmine Cervellino was arrested on account of being passive-aggressive towards his wife. He was released on bail shortly after, but still faces threatening and disorderly conduct charges.

The 49-year-old man and his wife, Carol, have two kids together. The two are now going through a divorce, and quite obviously, do not get along all that well.
