Witnesses say the man, identified as Bernard Kilkenny, fled the crime scenes on a BMX bicycle with a V-shaped handle

Contrary to what some might assume after watching one too many blockbusters, it's not just sports cars or helicopters that make great getaway vehicles. No, Sir, the good old bicycle too is perfectly suited to help folks escape the law after committing one crime or another.

In fact, a criminal complaint that was filed in a federal court in the US this past Thursday says that, over the past few weeks, a man robbed as many as 15 stores and gas stations in New York, and on most of these occasions, he made his getaway on a bicycle.

Mind you, the guy was a professional robber

In the criminal complaint filed earlier this week, the authorities who handled this case detail that the robberies in question took place between October 30 and December 6 in the counties of Westchester, Putnam, Orange and Dutchess in New York.

Witnesses say that, after using a black scarf to cover his face, the man simply walked into the stores and the gas stations and used a gun to threaten employees and customers. After being given the money he demanded, he simply left.

Rather than getting behind the wheel of a fast car or some other more impressive getaway vehicle, the man simply pedaled away on a black BMX bike that had V-shaped handle bars and foot pegs on the rear tire, folks who saw him commit these crimes detail.

These stories that police officers heard from witnesses are, in some cases, corroborated by surveillance videos. So, yes, this guy, identified as Bernard Kilkenny, really did use a bicycle to flee the scene or the crime after robbing the stores and gas stations.

How the bicycle-riding robber was caught

Interestingly enough, it appears that Bernard Kilkenny ended up behind bars because, towards the end of November, he was pulled over for a vehicle violation and the police chanced to find a black BMX bike, together with a gun, in his car, The Journal News informs.

Needless to say, the black BMX bike and the gun that authorities found in the man's car when they pulled him over are probably the same ones that Bernard Kilkenny used to rob the stores and gas stations. In it understood that, presently, the man finds himself behind bars.

Since he was taken into custody on November 17 and until now, neither Bernard Kilkenny nor his lawyer has made any public comments on the charges filed against him. Bernard Killkenny is currently detained without bail and will probably spend some time in jail.
